This I Know

This I know…

  • That everyone else except me and thee are not too stupid to get it.
  • That nobody should be spoken down to, especially if they are rural and working class, like me.
  • That stories, real stories and not just “do this because…,” are the lifeblood of being human, of human communication.
  • That all people, all places and all things have their stories, and they are many.
  • That any story worth telling can be told in a myriad of ways, and that no one way is intrinsically more worthy than any other.
  • That most everyone I know feels insulted or at least bored by almost all the advertising on television.
  • That long copy, written well and with respect, still works a treat.
  • That postcard ads – big image, short text – are simply one link in the chain.
  • That advertising can be a dialog but rarely ever is in this market. Why?
  • That we are all in sales, even if only selling ourselves.
  • That great ads cannot be cobbled up out of nothing.
  • That everyone knows women, boomers and seniors are huge untapped markets but still nobody is doing anything about it.
  • That everyone is intrinsically creative, despite school, life and society doing their level best to beat it out of us all.
  • That what Gandhi said is still true: “You must be the change you wish to see in the world.”
