Films

Nothing stands still in the media world. I’ve now upgraded my digital production facility with the latest technologies, and am working on some challenging Sisomo – sight, sound, motion – projects of various kinds.

My Asian Heart, the documentary feature film that I conceived, research and wrote is in production, and is about to be released this year, in its cinema version at the Sydney Film Festival, and after that in its television broadcast form on the SBS free-to-air channel – details are on the My Asian Heart page.

All Things Change

It is no longer enough to simply write the copy for a media production. Nowadays you need to be able to produce it all yourself as well, if called on to do so. The media world has changed so much since I started writing for it, and it keeps changing at a cracking pace. Back then film was the dominant medium for creating moving images, and a fully-fledged production facility was well beyond the means of any individual. Now, all you need is a top end Apple Mac, Final Cut Pro Studio, some graphics and photo editing software, and the best hardware you can afford.

Here, depicted below, is some of what I have right now, all regular professional grade gear, but a number of inspiring individuals have already proved you can make amazing media productions with lower end hardware and software, after adding liberal doses of patience and fortitude.

A Revolution Is Here

A revolution is occurring right now in the digital media, with one harbinger being Canon’s new EOS 5D Mark II camera. It makes an excellent high megapixel stills camera as well as a very handy B-roll high definition video camera. Samples of what it can do in stills and video are here:

The 5D’s ability to handle low-level available light in video has to be seen to be believed, and I look forward to its technology finding its way into Canon’s HDV camcorder range soon.
